WHAT IS JUNETEENTH?
Brief History
Juneteenth commemorates the announcement on June 19th, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, which marked a significant moment in the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. While President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had formally declared the freedom of all slaves in Confederate states in 1863, its enforcement was uneven and delayed in many areas. Texas, being one of the most remote Confederate states, did not receive this crucial news until Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and issued General Order No. 3, which officially informed the enslaved population of their freedom. It symbolizes a pivotal point in American history, representing both the promise of liberty and the enduring challenges in its realization.
Today, Juneteenth stands as a pivotal milestone, commemorating freedom and serving as a day of reflection and remembrance.
